Human-computer interaction (HCI) researchers around the world are holding events in parallel to CHI ’24 (May 11-16th, 2024), an initiative called para.chi. Dr. Katie Seaborn @ Tokyo Tech is hosting para.chi.tokyo with Dr. Giulia Barbareschi @ Keio University and Dr. Alarith Uhde @ the University of Tokyo.
Motivations run the gamut: the #whychi movement; the crises in Hawai’i, where CHI ’24 is taking place; desires for more sustainable and accessible conferencing; concerns about global pandemics and geopolitical events; the decision to remove synchronous participation for virtual authors at CHI ’24, which disproportionately affects students, early career researchers, and all those unable or unwilling to join in-person; and a wish for stronger ties locally.
Through para.chi.tokyo, we offer a parallel event to CHI ’24 that (i) provides a live session for accepted virtual papers and unsubmitted papers and HCI journal papers; (ii) enables networking opportunities; and (iii) connects students and early career researchers with a diversity of HCI folk locally and online.
This is the final schedule. We have a full-day event.
Dates and times are JST.
Whether you have work to present or want to be where the action’s at, join para.chi.tokyo online or face-to-face as a presenter or audience member. You don’t have to be in the Tokyo area or even this time zone. We welcome engagement from around the globe.
Do you have a virtual paper accepted at CHI ’24? Perhaps you chose not to submit to CHI ’24 this year, but have a paper ready? Maybe you have a HCI journal paper just accepted or published and are looking for a live venue. Present your work and get feedback from a live audience in the Tokyo-Japan-Asia region! Participation is free.
