Coercive design strategies. Manipulative user interfaces. Interface sludge. Consumer deception. “Dark” patterns. Tricky patterns. Malicious patterns. Deceptive patterns. Interface deception and its ilk.

Interface deception refers to elements designed into the user interface that steer user decision-making and behaviour in ways that benefit shareholders but typically harm users, even simply by reducing user agency. We are tackling this modern and wide-scale ethical design challenge with cultural sensitivity.

Overview

Discovering and Dismantling Dark Patterns in Everyday Interfaces

Our goals are threefold: untangle the nature of interface deception from a human-centred perspective; discover how interface deception is perceived by professionals and the public alike; and explore how interface deception can be redressed. We are carrying out exploratory and confirmatory research on global populations. We are developing and evaluating education, prevention, and protection platforms. The contributions will be a human-centered risk-benefit framework grounded in case studies from the real world, culturally-sensitive knowledge about interface deception, and a suite of methods for enabling a future free of deception.
